The island was marsh until the 1920s, when developers dredged canals and filled the low ground. Early summer bungalows were later replaced by year-round homes. Today most houses date from the prewar years through the 1960s: Capes, colonials, ranches, split-levels, and a lot of hi-ranches and expanded Capes. Canals run through the hamlet, and homes in the Barnum Isle section along streets like Kingston Boulevard have docks and pools. The Yacht Club is a gated waterfront townhouse community. Most homes are in a flood zone. In a hi-ranch, the lower level is usually a carpeted den near grade. Upstairs bedrooms often keep carpet, with area rugs in living rooms.
