Why oriental rugs need a real wash

Hand-knotted rugs trap dry soil deep in the foundation, where it grinds the wool like sandpaper every time someone walks on it. A surface cleaning can make the top look brighter while leaving that grit behind. A full wash starts by dusting the rug to get the dry soil out, then washing and rinsing the whole rug.

Wool and natural dyes also react to heat and pH. Some older rugs have dyes that bleed, so we test every color before washing.

Our process

We inspect the rug with you and note wear, moth damage, stains and fringe condition. Once it is picked up, we dust it, test the dyes, wash both sides with a wool-safe solution, rinse until the water runs clear, clean the fringe by hand and dry the rug flat. Then we groom the pile and return it.

If a rug needs repairs, like fringe or edge binding, we tell you before we start.

How often to clean

Rugs in busy rooms should be washed every 1 to 2 years; rugs in formal or low-traffic rooms every 3 to 5 years. Rotate them every six months so they wear and fade evenly.
