The Babylon branch of the LIRR stops at an elevated station on Great Neck Road. Copiague's housing came in waves. In 1906 developer John Campagnoli laid out Marconiville north of the railroad, named for his schoolmate Guglielmo Marconi, and it grew into a mostly Italian-American neighborhood. In the 1920s builders added bayfront tracts: Amity Harbor, Hawkins Estate and American Venice, which once offered gondola rides on its Grand Canal. Postwar capes, dormered capes and ranches fill much of the rest. There are about 8,000 housing units, and in 2010 about 82 percent were owner-occupied. Inland, carpet is mostly in bedrooms and finished basements. Down by the water it is a different story. During Hurricane Sandy, one American Venice resident reported two feet of water inside his house, so carpet and pad near the canals face moisture that inland homes rarely see.
