Carpet cleaning in Oyster Bay: what to know
Oyster Bay is the North Shore hamlet at the head of Oyster Bay Harbor and the seat of the Town of Oyster Bay. Downtown is a few blocks of Audrey Avenue, South Street and Main Street, with Raynham Hall, the LIRR terminal and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park close by. Sagamore Hill, Roosevelt's home, is just over the line in Cove Neck.
The houses run older than most of Nassau. Victorians from the 1880s sit on the side streets, and the hills around the hamlet hold Gold Coast estates. That means wool rugs, antique chairs and stair runners. We are about 40 minutes away in Deer Park, so we plan these visits a day or two ahead when we can.
Oyster Bay homes: Victorians, colonials and harbor houses
The hamlet itself is small, with fewer than 3,000 housing units in the 2000 census. Many homes date back well over a century. A country-style Victorian on Pearl Street, built in 1883, is typical of the side streets near downtown. Colonials fill in the newer blocks, and the villages around the hamlet, like Cove Neck, Oyster Bay Cove and Upper Brookville, hold large estate houses on big lots. In these homes you find more area rugs over wood floors than wall-to-wall: wool orientals in front rooms, runners on narrow old staircases, and carpet mostly in bedrooms. Furniture tends to be older too, including antique and heirloom pieces. Cleaning here is about protecting floors and finishes as much as getting the dirt out.
Oyster Bay areas we serve
We cover all of Oyster Bay, ZIP 11771, from the downtown blocks of Audrey Avenue and South Street to the waterfront at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, plus the surrounding 11771 villages such as Cove Neck, and East Norwich (11732) to the south. From Deer Park we head west on the Northern State Parkway or the Long Island Expressway, then take Route 106 north through Jericho and East Norwich straight into the hamlet. The drive is about 40 minutes.
Carpet and rug issues in Oyster Bay homes
Wool rugs in older houses
Older Oyster Bay homes lean on wool area rugs over hardwood. Wool cleans well, but some dyes can bleed if they get too hot or too wet. We test a corner first, pre-treat spots, and adjust water temperature and moisture for the rug. Rugs are lifted off the wood or set on protectors so nothing soaks into the floor underneath.
Harbor dampness
Homes near the harbor and the low ground by Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park sit in damp air, and Hurricane Sandy wrecked West Shore Road in 2012. Carpet in basements and ground floors near the water can hold a musty smell. We pre-treat, extract with strong suction so little water stays behind, and use enzyme treatment where pets are part of the problem.
Narrow stairs and old runners
Victorian and early colonial houses have tight, steep staircases, often with a runner held by rods or tacks. Stairs collect more soil per square foot than any room. We clean each step by hand with an upholstery-size tool, work around the rods, and keep moisture low so the old treads and the wood around the runner stay dry.

Carpet cleaning in Oyster Bay: questions
Can you clean an antique oriental rug in our Oyster Bay house without taking it away?
Many wool rugs can be cleaned in place. We test the dyes first, and if a rug is very old, fragile or bleeds, we tell you before doing anything. For rugs on wood floors we protect the floor underneath. The price for each rug is confirmed before work starts.
You are in Deer Park. Will you really come out to Oyster Bay?
Yes. Oyster Bay is about 40 minutes from our shop in Deer Park by way of Route 106. Same-day visits are possible on many days, and next-day is typical. Booking a day or two ahead gives you the best choice of times, and booking online takes $20 off.
Our basement near the harbor smells musty. Will cleaning the carpet fix it?
Cleaning removes the soil, bacteria and pet residue that feed most odors, and enzyme treatment helps with pet urine. If the smell comes from water getting into the basement, the carpet will start smelling again until that is fixed. We will tell you which one it looks like.
How much does carpet cleaning cost in Oyster Bay?
Carpet cleaning starts at $119 for one room of any size. Stairs, hallways, pet treatment and protector are priced on the walk-through, and you approve the price before we start. Booking online takes $20 off.
