Is it worth it to get a rug cleaned professionally?

For good rugs, yes

A wool or hand-knotted rug can last generations with care. Dry soil trapped in the foundation wears the fibers from the inside, and spills and pet accidents can permanently change dyes if left. A proper wash every one to two years protects the investment.

For inexpensive rugs, maybe not

A low-cost synthetic rug may cost more to clean than to replace, especially with heavy pet damage. We will tell you when that's the case.

Signs your rug needs a professional wash

Colors look dull or gray, the rug smells musty or like urine on humid days, dirt falls out when you flip a corner and tap the back, or the fringe has turned brown. Any of these means soil has built up in the foundation, where only a full wash can reach it.

Why not do it yourself?

Home machines over-wet rugs, leave soap behind and can make dyes bleed. Wool and natural fibers need specific pH and temperature.
